The catalogue that accompanies the exhibition is the result of a process of rigorous research and includes four essays, two of them by the exhibition’s curator, Leticia Ruiz Gómez. The first is on the artist’s critical fortunes and the second on Maíno’s family origins and his early years, presenting significant new data. In addition, there is an essay by Gabriele Finaldi, Associate Director of Curatorship at the Museo del Prado, that focuses on the Rome in which Maíno trained and worked. Finally, María Cruz de Carlos, MICINN researcher, and Fernando Marías, Senior Professor of Art History at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, have written a text on Madrid and Toledo, the two cities in which Maíno lived and worked following his return from Italy. Their essay reveals the rich cultural and religious context in which the painter lived.

The remainder of the catalogue comprises the individual entries on the paintings. These are exceptionally comprehensive texts on all the known works by Maíno, including a number of new attributions. Most of the entries have been written by Leticia Ruiz with the remainder by José Milicua, Alfonso G. de Ceballos, Margarita Cuyás, Javier Docampo, María Cruz de Carlos and Fernando Marías.

Finally, the catalogue has a documentary appendix with the results of the exhaustive revision of all the known documentation on the artist that was undertaken for the purposes of the exhibition. It comprises an important documentary appendix of 64 documents relating to the artist and his family, of which 32 have not previously been published while the remainder have been revised and newly transcribed. Together they constitute a body of material of fundamental importance for a study of the artist.
