The condition of the painting
The painting was last restored in 1998. The paint surface had lifted in some areas and there was a risk of loss of pigment particles. These areas were re-attached, ensuring the preservation of the work.
In addition, oxidised varnishes that reduced the sense of depth and altered the original chromatic range were removed. The composition was covered by a yellow layer of old varnish, obscuring Rembrandt’s handling, which achieves depth and volume through the colour and thickness of each stroke.
