A portrait of a friar wearing the habit of the Trinitarian Order, with a dark background.
This work's small format and the fact that it is unsigned indicate that it may have been a study for a larger portrait that is now lost.
El Greco painted numerous similar portraits of friends and leading figures in Toledo at that time. Normally he depicted them on a dark background, lit by a single light source that emphasizes the almost pure white tones and the sitters' faces.
