This is a portrait of the erudite historian, Aureliano de Beruete y Moret, director of the Prado Museum and son of the great landscape artist of the same name. The young man of twenty-six is shown to the knees, standing, in an image that emphasizes his natural pose, with one hand in his pocket and the other holding his cane and gloves.
This work is intimately related to the portraits that same painter made of Aureliano de Beruete, Father (P4646) and his wife, Teresa de Moret y Remisa (P4655). In these works, Sorolla offers his the best of his portraiture, approaching the image with a very modern concept influenced by American portraiture of that period. At the same time, the weight of Spanish pictorial tradition is visible in the somber palette, dominated by black, with changing tones in the suit. This is derived directly from Velasquez's works.
