A biblical scene of the Passion
showing Christ directing a
supplicatory gaze at Heaven during
his agony on the Cross (Matthew w7,
32-56; Mark 15, 21-41; Luke 23,
26-49; John 19, 17-28). Christ is
held by four nails and rests his
feet on a platform. He wears the
Crown of Thorns and is covered with
the loincloth of purity. Over his
head is the sign in Latin, Hebrew
and Greet that, according to the
Bible, Pontius Pilate ordered
placed there. It reads: “This is
Jesus of Nazareth, King of the
Jews.” At the foot of the Cross is
the skull of Adam, the first man,
whose sin brought death to the
World, and who was redeemed by the
Passion of the Messiah. The
background includes a dark valley
with trees, various buildings and a
tenebrous horizon.
This work comes from the Convent of
the Recollet Bernardines of the
Most Holy Sacrament in Madrid.
