This bust portrait of the king between the ages of 20 and 22, wearing armor and a red sash, is a fragment of a larger painting. The stylistic differences between the head —in a more severe style— and the armor and sash lead us to think they were painted at different times.
In its present format, it was owned by the Duke of Arco, whose possessions passed to the Royal Collection in 1745.
