This pendant to Carlos IV, Prince
of Asturias (P2189) was probably
painted in 1765 on the occasion of
their engagement to be married.
María Luisa was born to Felipe de
Bourbon, Duke of Parma, and Louise
Isabelle of France, in Parma in
1715 and died in Rome in 1819,
seventeen days before her husband.
The future Queen is depicted in a
garden, wearing an elegant white
dress. The insignia of the Order of
la Cruz Estrellada hangs from its
wide neckline. Her fine diamond
headdress is accompanied by similar
earrings and a short necklace. She
holds two carnations in her right
hand and a fan in her left, with a
miniature portrait on her
bracelet.
Her elegant, refined air reflect
the courtly spirit of the Ancien
Régime.
