After mystically experiencing stigmata, Saint Francis is comforted by an angel. The subject of angelical consolation started to be very popular in Italian painting in the second half of the sixteenth century.
The strong chiaroscuro and detailed rendering of the textiles and of the angel's wings reveal the influence of Caravaggio, an artist whom Gentileschi knew personally in Rome during the first years of the seventeenth century.
