This cast-bronze work is based on a late-Hellenistic work in the Borghese Collection in Rome. It was commissioned by Velasquez and cast in 1652 for Felipe IV.
Like Hermaphrodite (E223) and Boy with Thorn (E163), this bronze casting was commissioned by Velasquez in Rome during his second voyage to Italy (1648-1651). Along with many other cast pieces, these were intended to decorate Madrid's Alcázar Palace which the King's Painter was decorating during those years with paintings, sculptures and other valuable items.
