Luis Meléndez. Still lifes for the Prince of Asturias

22 June – 23 September 2012

Fundación Selgas-Fagalde. El Pito, Cudillero (Asturias)

This exhibition brings together 26 of the 45 still lifes commissioned by Charles III from Luis Meléndez (1716-1780) for the Prince of Asturias, the future Charles IV. Reflecting the spirit of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, Meléndez’s superb set of paintings depict all the fruit and vegetables that could be grown in Spain during the four seasons of the year. This celebratory compendium is depicted in a lyrically realist style and deploys the refined technique that Meléndez acquired through his family’s tradition of miniature painting. The light in these works emphasises the tactile quality of the raw foodstuffs and the simple kitchen utensils and vessels.
