The Museo del Prado is temporarily enriching its El Greco collection with the artist’s View and Plan of Toledo
This morning Gabriele Finaldi, Associate Director of Curatorship at the Museo del Prado, and Santiago Palomero, General Deputy Director of State Museums, accompanied by Leticia Ruiz, the Prado’s El Greco curator, presented the special display of El Greco’s View and Plan of Toledo to the press. The canvas, which is one of El Greco’s most original works, painted shortly before his death, will be temporarily displayed at the Prado following its restoration at the Museum. It will be shown alongside three other works by the artist: Saint Sebastian, Saint Andrew and Saint Francis, and Saint Bernard, which also include partial views of Toledo.
The Museo del Prado is presenting the largest and most important retrospective ever to be devoted to the work of Joaquín Sorolla, the most internationally celebrated Spanish painter of the XIX century. The exhibition includes more than 100 paintings by the artist and will offer a comprehensive overview of his finest works, among them all of his great masterpieces. They include the group of panels entitled Visions of Spain, painted for the Hispanic Society of America and brought to Spain by Bancaja in 2007. This exceptional exhibition has benefited from the sponsorship of Bancaja, who in addition to their significant undertaking as organising body of the exhibition “Sorolla. Vision of Spain” that was shown to great acclaim in various Spanish cities, has now made a further contribution in the form of their collaboration with this major exhibition project at the Prado.

The President of the French Republic, Nicolás Sarkozy, and his wife, accompanied by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía, this afternoon saw the work that launches the Museo del Prado’s “Invited Work” programme. This is one of the most poetic and beautiful paintings by the Lorraine master Georges de La Tour and is normally to be seen in the Musée du Louvre. The tour also included a visit to the first thematic gallery that the Prado is devoting to the early Bourbons as part of its current project of rearranging and expanding its displays. Both the temporary exhibition of the painting from the Louvre, which will remain at the Prado for two months, and the new display of Bourbon portraits in the room that previously housed Goya’s 2nd and 3rd of May, are sponsored by Fundación AXA.
The Royal Board of Trustees of the Museo del Prado approves the modification of the entry prices to the Museum
The Museo del Prado will be modifying its entry prices. This initiative has the dual aim of reducing the price of a pre-booked ticket on the internet, which will go down to 7 Euros, and raising the price of a general ticket bought at the Museum’s ticket desks, which goes up to 8 Euros. This innovative new formula is intended to encourage the use of pre-booking on the internet (on www.museodelprado.es) in order to make entry to the Museum easier and avoid the normal queues. The publication includes a number of works that will be incorporated into the new display of the Museum’s permanent collection over the course of the next few years
For the first time in Spain the Museo del Prado is presenting a selection of 19th-century English paintings from the Museo de Arte de Ponce. Entitled The Sleeping Beauty. Victorian Painting from the Museo de Arte de Ponce, the exhibition offers the visiting public a unique opportunity to see works of the stature of Flaming June by Frederic, Lord Leighton and Edward Burne-Jones’ monumental masterpiece, The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon.

Coinciding with the implementation of its new four-year Action Plan, whose principal projects include the launch of the Study Centre’s full programme, the Museo del Prado has announced the forthcoming start of this Centre’s activities with the opening of its Library, and the inauguration of the Prado’s new Academic Chair, whose first incumbent is Philippe de Montebello
Their Royal Heighnesses, the Prince and Princess of Asturias, inaugurated today the major exhibition on Francis Bacon (1909-1992) organised to coincide with the centenary of the artist's birth. The exhibition, which will open to the public tomorrow, Tuesday 3 February has been organised in collaboration with the Prado by the Tate Britain in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it will be shown after Madrid. In contrast to London and New York, where Bacon’s work has been regularly shown over the last 40 years, the artist has only been the subject of one interesting but relatively small exhibition in Madrid consisting of 17 new works of the time, shown at the Fundación Juan March in 1978. For this reason the present event is of particular significance to Madrid and also constitutes a unique and heartfelt homage to Bacon, who regularly visited the Prado in the last years of his life and who died in Madrid on 28 April 1992.
With the launch of a new project by Google, the Museo del Prado becomes the first museum in the world to offer high-resolution images of its masterpieces for access and navigation on the Internet. These images will reveal details invisible to the naked eye of paintings such as Las Meninas and The Three Graces.

HM the King inaugurated today the exhibition Among Gods and Men. Classical Sculptures from the Albertinum in Dresden and the Museo del Prado in which the Prado presents for the first time outside Germany the key works of one of the best collections of historical sculpture in Europe, the Skulpturensammlung Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. The exhibition, labelled by the Directors of both institution as exceptional, due to the fragility of the works and transportation difficulties taking into account the dimensions and weight of many of the pieces, runs through 12 April.
