Old Books Holdings
The Library has an important collection of around 4,500 volumes on art published prior to 1900. Prior to 2003 the Library owned around 2,000 books of this type, including those from the library of Valentín Carderera, including extremely rare French and Italian titles. In 2003, 1,500 volumes from the library of José María Cervelló were added to the collection including a large number of 16th- to 19th-century treatises on art and architecture. All these titles are now available via the Library’s catalogue (sub-catalogue Monografías antiguas) and the database of the Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico Español.
The latest addition, which has yet to be catalogued, consists of 1,000 volumes from the Madrazo family library, including a fine group of books that belonged to the head of the family, José de Madrazo.
In addition to printed works, the Library has a small holding of around 150 manuscripts, mainly from the Cervelló collection.
