Dacian from Trajan’s Forum

120 - 130. Africano marble, Bigio antico, Marmo Greco scritto. On display elsewhere

The present head, to which the bust was added in the eighteenth century, probably belonged to one of the statues of captured Dacians (from Dacia, the region to the West of the Black Sea) in Trajan’s Forum in Rome. It depicts a Dacian chief with his characteristic cap (pileus in Latin) and a sad, resigned expression reflecting his captured state. Other surviving sculptures on this subject suggest that he wore the typical Dacian dress of long-sleeved tunic and trousers. Basalt (head) and coloured marble (bust).
