Dead Christ, surrounded by the Instruments of the Passion, with God the Father and the Holy Spirit

Second half of the XVI century. Wash, Pencil, Grey-brown ink on paper. Not on display

Although the present composition is ultimately dependent in origin on Albrecht Dürer´s great woodcut of the Trinity, a Florentine interpretation of the design is evident in the conception of the figure of the dead Christ, which derives from that in

Michelangelo´s marble Pieta in Florence Cathedral and not from Dürer´s slender corpse. Further evidence that the Prado drawing could be a Florentine variant of Durer´s model is supported by the development of this same variation of the design in the later compositions of two Florentine artists, Girolamo Macchietti (1535-1592) and Ludovico Cardi, called Cigoli (1559-1613) respectively, both works conceived as altarpieces for the Risaliti family chapel in the church of S. Croce, Florence.
