El Cid
Ca. 1879. Etching, Printing on japon on japon. Not on display
This print of El Cid (P4318) was made by Gilbert, although Rosa Bonheur intervened with some retouching in pencil, as evidenced by her signature. A gift from the nephew of the dealer Gambart to the Museo del Prado, it faithfully reflects the prestige in which the original painting was held in Spain, where the artist was awarded the Grand Cross of Isabella the Catholic. The work was also copied by artists who were already established when it was painted, like Ramón Martí Alsina.
