Enrique Simonet y Baca, the artist’s father
1893. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
Simonet painted this portrait in Malaga on his return from a study period in Rome and following the success of Flevit super illam (1892). The image conveys the artist’s esteem for his father, a land registrar who lived from 1830 to 1899. A cultured man, he actively supported his son’s artistic career and funded his first trip to Italy in 1885.
