Female Saint Seated on a Cloud

Early Finales del siglo XVI - XVII century. White chalk, Black chalk on tinted paper. Not on display

Traditionally attributed to the Sienese Francesco Vanni (1563-1610), this drawing was subsequently placed in the collection as the work of the eighteenth-century Roman painter Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787). It is in fact typical of the work of Lazzaro Tavarone, the long-lived and prolific Genoese painter, who was wont to draw his figure studies on a prepared red ground, as here. Many examples by the artist of this category of drawing are known, including examples in the Palazzo Rosso, Genoa; the Uffizi, Florence; and the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.

Although Tavarone´s compositional studies are invariably drawn in pen and brown wash, his studies for individual figures, such as this, are roughly drawn in black chalk, with the occasional touch of white chalk in the highlights, on paper prepared red, a rather unusual technique for a Genoese artist to adopt at the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth. The artist, or a member of his studio, would have mixed the red pigment and then brushed it quite coarsely onto large sheets of cream or buff paper, which would then have been flattened and cut to shape once dry. In this particular drawing it is possible to see that the red paint was brushed horizontally across the sheet in slightly curving strokes, the imperfections in application especially visible in the upper half, in the area of the saint´s face and shoulder.

The figure represented here may have been intended as St. Mary Magdalen, since she holds a small crucifix in her left hand. She does not have long flowing hair, however, one of her normal attributes, nor is her demure attire suggestive of this saint. Unfortunately, a corresponding figure has not so far been identified in any of Tavarone´s painted work (Text drawn from Turner, N.: From Michelangelo to Annibale Carracci. A century of Italian drawings from the Prado, Art Services International-Museo Nacional del Prado, 2008, p. 162).
