Maria Carolina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Countess of Montemolín

Ca. 1850. . Room 062

María Carolina de Borbón-Dos Sicilias (1820-1861), ninth daughter of Francisco I de las Dos Sicilias and the Infanta María Isabel de Borbón, married in Caserta, on July 10, 1850, with Carlos Luis de Borbón y Braganza , Count of Montemolín (1818-1861), son of Carlos María Isidro de Borbón and María Francisca de Braganza, who succeeded his father in the aspirations to the throne of Spain in 1845. By her marriage, Carolina was titular Queen of Spain for the Carlists. After her death and that of her husband, without issue, her brother-in-law Juan de Borbón y Braganza, Count of Montizón (1822-1887), was the pretender to the Spanish throne of the Carlists with the name of Juan III.

Using a technique similar to that used by Spanish miniaturists of the Elizabethan period, Pietrocola offers his excellent miniature skills in this portrait of Carolina de Borbón. It was painted in Naples, the city where the princess resided with her husband since their marriage in 1850, and made in the same years as the portrait of her sister María Amalia (1818-1857), wife of the infant Sebastián Gabriel de Borbón y Braganza. (1811-1875), which is kept by the Museo Arqueológico Nacional (Madrid). In both miniatures, Pietrocola combines the austerity of color typical of the Spanish school with the refined technique of French miniaturists.
