Mummy’s Boy
Mid-XIXcentury. Wash, Pencil, Pencil, Indian ink, Grey ink, Iron gall ink on laid paper. Not on display
This drawing is one of a set of 77 anonymous copies of Goya´s Caprichos, which have no apparent relation to Martín Rico´s work but became a part of his collection in the second half of the 19th century. They constitute an outstanding example of the interest that these works by Goya aroused as soon as they were published, and of their subsequent fame, which led to all sorts of copies and versions, including some, like these, that are very close to the originals.
This work is part of a series of drawings that belonged to painter Martín Rico. They were donated to the museum by his granddaughter, Claude Rico Robert, after her collection of forty of the artist´s sketchbooks was acquired by that institution in 2007. This highly varied group speaks eloquently of the painter´s interests and friendships (Text from Matilla, J. M. in: Memoria de Actividades 2012, Museo Nacional del Prado, 2013, pp. 58-65).
