Phaeton

XVI century. Wash, Pencil, Pencil ground, Grey-brown ink on paper.
Not on display

Cambiaso´s own rendering of this composition, corresponding in all particulars to the present sheet, is in the Ambrosiana, Milán (inv. no. 46). Connected by the Suidas with the composition of one of the scenes in Cambiaso´s frescoes on the ceiling of a room on the piano nobile of the Palazzo Doria, formerly Spinola Valenza, Via Garibaldi, Genoa. In the corresponding fresco, however, the chariot and horses are overturned and fall headlong through the sky following Phaeton´s loss of control of the steeds. Neverthless in a later comment in their book, the Suidas were inclined to connect the same drawing with the fresco of Phoebus in his Chariot, once on the ceiling of a room in the Casa di Domenico Boccardo, formerly Lomellini, Sampierdarena.
