Powerful witch taken out by the finest flyers because of her hydropsy

1796 - 1797. Pencil, Iron gall ink, Black chalk lines on laid paper Not on display

This preparatory drawing for the etching Capricho 65, Where is mommy going? (G02102) is part of The Dreams, a series of twenty-six pen-and-ink drawings that serve as the basis for the Caprichos. Headed by Dream 1. The Author Dreaming, which became number 43 in the definitive and expanded Caprichos. The subject matter was common in representations of that period. The composition presents four figures accompanied by nocturnal animals. The owl and two of the figures hold up the large nude woman at the center of the drawing. Another wraps herself around her from behind. This placement corresponds to that of the preparatory drawing. The subject is known to us through handwritten notes, including one at the Museo del Prado, by Valentín Carderera, and another at the Biblioteca Nacional. The former reads: Mommy suffers from hydropsy and has been ordered to walk. We hope to God that she gets better. In his Tesoro de la Lengua Castellana (1674), Sebastián de Covarrubias defines Hydropsy as an illness of the aqueous humor that swells the entire body. It is sometimes mistaken for greed, because those who suffer from it drink but can never slake their thirst, just as the greedy are never satisfied, no matter how much they acquire. The second note expands the list of womanly sins and vices: In women, lasciviousness and inebriation bring innumerable disorders and veritable witchery. The Museo del Prado has various works related to Dream 9 (G02153/G00655), and there is also a steel-plated copper plate from the same series at Calcografía Nacional in Madrid (210 x 162 mm, 559.47 g. No. 3491). The mark of the plate is visible on the drawing as a result of its tracing on the copper plate (210 x 167 mm), as are 26 mm vertical laid lines. Under the inscription that bears the drawing’s title is another in pencil that is barely visible as it is covered by the former (Text from: Matilla, J.M. and others: El libro de los Caprichos. Francisco de Goya: dos siglos de interpretaciones, 1799-1999. Catálogo de los dibujos, pruebas de estado, láminas de cobre y estampas de la primera edición, Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, 1999. pp. 21, 330).
