Small agate cup with dark bands

Ca. 1600. Agate, Enamel, Gold. Room 079B

With an oval mouth and bell-shaped profile, the body of the vessel, perhaps a recarved ancient piece, is supported by a baluster stem and an almost flat foot. The joints are hidden by three gold mounts with denticles and a band of painted enamel with motifs of blue, green and yellow pointed leaves on a white ground. It is a simple piece that is hard to classify, but its enamelled mount could belong to the style of the Paris school of the first third of the 17th century, whose decorative motif of pointed leaves often appears in different aesthetic versions on other pieces in the Dauphin’s Treasure. Similar small enamelled flowers decorate the frame of the foot of the “Ewer with Amor” at the Louvre, OA 10.409, and the exterior moulding on the foot of another vessel known as the “Minerva ewer”, MR 445. Both are the work of Pierre Delabarre, a Parisian silversmith who became a master in 1625 (L. Arbeteta, in press).
