The Agony in the Garden
XVII century. Red wash, Pencil ground on dark yellow paper. Not on display
The scene depicts an apostle lying down in the foreground. Christ appears kneeling in the centre, in left profile, and with his hands clasped together. To the left, there is an angel, and to the right, in the background, are the other two apostles.
The figure of the apostle in the foreground strongly evokes the technique and model of Saint Jerome by Pereda in the British Museum. The angel is also associated with the drawings of the Immaculate Conception by his hand, which are held in the Uffizi and support the attribution.
