The Virgin / Male Nude Fragment
1769. White chalk, Black chalk on grey paper. Not on display
This work depicts a female figure leaning towards the left of the drawing with a cloak over her head. It shares many similarities with D003265. On the verso, there is a fragment of a study of a male nude in black pencil and chalk. This is a preparatory drawing for the central figure of The Nativity in the Church of San Pascual in Aranjuez, painted alongside its related episodes (Annunciation, Ascension and Pentecost) in 1769 and no longer extant. Fernando Selma made an engraving (G000317 and G001564) of the canvas in 1808 (Catalogue of the Calcografía Nacional in Madrid, 1968, no. 28, fig. 2).
