Triptych with the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi and the Nativity with Angels and Shepherds
1525 - 1550. Oil on panel. Not on displayThis triptych shows The Adoration of the Magi on its central panel, with The Annunciation on the left door and The Adoration of the Angels and Shepherds on the right. Each scene takes place in a different space, unlike triptychs from earlier periods, where the landscape could be the same on all panels. The figures are dressed in luxurious clothing and the renaissance architecture stands out thanks tovboth Coecke´s studies with Barend van Orley, and the theoretical knowledge he gained from Sebastiano Serlio´s Treatise on Architecture —he was its translator— as well as his own texts on artistic and architectural subjects. A good example of his interest in renaissance art is the portico he uses as the setting for The Adoration of the Magi. It is repeated in various works linked to Coecke´s workshop. The movement of the clothes and hair, used to accentuate a growing dynamism, are characteristic of this artist´s work.
