In the elegantly classical arrangement of the composition, the drawing shows knowledge of the work of Giuseppe Porta, called Salviati (c. 1520-c.1575), but the handling seems nearer to that of Bernardino India, or a close associate. Formerly attributed to the Emilian painter and draughtsman Prospero Fontana (before 1512-1597). IN a note on the modern museum mount, dated 1981, J. A. Gere rightly suggested that this is by the Veronese, Bernardino India. The paper has been extended at the bottom and to the left, presumably by the artist, since some of the contours of the drawing are carried over into these areas.
