The Painter Aureliano de Beruete is the most outstanding of all the portraits made by Sorolla. In this work he successfully combined the Velázquez inspiration that was a feature of his oeuvre during that period with direct and rigorous painting from the life and a profound and sensitive interpretation of the sitter’s outstanding personality. Sorolla was especially gifted at portraiture owin

Sorolla y Bastida, Joaquín

The Valencian painter Antonio Gomar (1853-1911), who specialised in landscapes and decorative compositions, is portrayed by his compatriot Sorolla at the age of 53. The work’s landscape format, influenced by photography, and which Sorolla reserved for portraits of family and friends, is indicative of how close he was to his model. Painted in the foreground, his body foreshortened to the left, and

Sorolla was the most gifted Spanish painter of his generation, excelling in portraiture. In the early years of the twentieth century, and especially after the encouragement of winning the Grand Prize in the 1900 Exposition Universelle Paris, he demonstrated the influence of Velázquez through the use of long, confident brushstrokes. This portrait of María de Figueroa y Bermejillo -the

Sorolla y Bastida, Joaquín

For Sorolla and his wife, the time spent in Italy formed part of the years at the beginning of their relationship when they confronted their first difficulties together. As late as 1915, nearly thirty years after this trip, Sorolla noted in a letter to his wife that he had ‘ordered a little frame for the Virgin you gave me when I left Spain to study in Rome. I think it looks good on it and will ma

The doctor poses in an armchair, crossing his legs and turning to look forward with a lively expression concentrated in his intelligent gaze. He looks about forty years old and wears a gray suit with a vest and gloves of the same color. His brightly lit figure stands out against a neutral gray background that darkens considerably at his back and appears to reflect the light from a gilded frame.Doc

The Actress María Guerrero as La dama boba
Oil on canvas. 1906
Sorolla y Bastida, Joaquín

This portrait of María Guerrero, Sorolla’s neighbour and friend, is probably the finest and most expressive example of the eminent actress’s lifelong obsession with her own image. From childhood, she had herself portrayed by some of the most famous painters of her time, many of whom were friends of her father, the set designer Ramón Guerrero. María Guerrero grew up in a cultur

In 1883 Rico received the most significant commissions of his career: two views of Venice for the Marquis of Casa Riera and this panoramic view of Paris for Josefa de Manzanedo e Intentas, II Marchioness of Manzanedo. One of the wealthiest women of her time, she was a very close friend of Ramón de Errazu, who owned a portrait of her by Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891). She had also

Carolus Duran. Charles-Emile-Auguste Durand

This work and its dedication reflect the friendship between the French artist Carolus-Duran and Matías Moreno (1840-1906), which arose during their time as copyists in the Museo del Prado and continued when both artists spent time in Toledo. Carolus-Duran’s appreciation and study of Velázquez influenced the subsequent development of his work, which enjoyed enormous international succ

Grindelwald
Oil on canvas. 1907
Beruete, Aureliano de

In the summers of 1905 to 1907 Aureliano de Beruete painted the landscape of the Alps. From the Swiss village of Grindelwald he climbed up to the Kleine Scheidegg pass by Mount Eiger where he painted from life. His rapid technique of broad brushstrokes and his ability to capture the local colour that tints the snow reveal an original interpretation of Impressionist pictorial devices.

Considered one of Benedito’s finest works by critics, this canvas depicts a group of picturesque women on the coast at Concarneau in Brittany. Esquivel, Antonio María

The most famous of Esquivel´s pieces and a leading work of Spanish Romanticism. Considered the maximum graphical testimony to the intellectual atmosphere during the reign of Isabel II (1830 - 1904), this canvas depicts a fictitious meeting of Esquivel´s most relevant cultural contemporaries. The composition combines the complexities of a group portrait with the scheme of Flemish Baroque cabinet po
