Queen Isabella the Catholic dictating her Will (preparatory study)
Oil on paper attached to cardboard. 1863
Rosales Gallinas, Eduardo

This study is an initial idea for the composition of the final canvas which the artist devised through numerous preparatory studies and drawings, the majority in the Prado. Rosales tried out the colour, lighting and arrangement of the figures, most of them grouped on the right including the seated Ferdinand the Catholic.

The drawing, composed of two sheets (D000146), is only half of a design for the interior of a cupola in an oval-shaped chapel, decorated with trompe-l’oeil architecture in the style of Mitelli and Colonna. In the central area, which feigns an open sky, cherubim hold an image of the Crucified Christ. They carry it in the manner of a heavenly apparition to a saint who would undoubtedly be in the mis

This is one of the few copies to survive showing the whole of Polidoro´s famous frieze with the Story of Niobe, painted below the windows of the first floor of the Palazzo Milesi, Via della Maschera d´Oro, Rome. The decoration of the façade of the Palazzo Milesi in 1526-27 is the last in Polidoro´s great sequence of palace façade decorations carried out in Rome in the first half of t
