Son of Hermes and Aphrodite, Hermaphrodite was a singularly handsome youth. According to Ovid (Metamorphoses 4, 285 ff.) Salmacis, the nymph from a lake in Caria, was enthralled by his beauty and passionately embraced him while he was bathing. Their two bodies merged as one, with double gender. This sculpture, commissioned by Velázquez in Italy for the decoration of Madrid´s Alcázar

Here, the artist proposes a commemorative bust of the illustrious painter. The work is based on a portrait of Goya as an old man (P864) painted by Vicente López in 1826. The resultant work has clear links to the statue of Goya that stands in front of the Prado Museum building´s north façade (the “Puerta de Goya” or “Goya Entrance”).

La Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid quiso donar para la nueva sala de su museo, con motivo del primer centenario en 1928 de la muerte del ilustre pintor Francisco de Goya, una plaqueta conmemorativa y una lápida, exigiendo que los autores debían ser académicos. Blay realizó una placa unifaz y José Capuz la lápida de un metro de alto, ambas conservadas en dicha institución. B
