Still Life with Vase of Flowers and a Puppy

Hamen y León, Juan Van Der

This work and its companion (P6413) belonged to Jean de Croy, Count of Solre and captain of the Flemish Royal Guard of Archers, of which Van der Hamen was a member. Unframed, the two paintings hung in De Croy’s Madrid palace, where they flanked the entrance to the painting gallery. As such, they may have served as a trompe l’oeil expansion of the real space, whose floor they probably reproduce. Th

It has often been stated that this painting is part of a series of four, all now in the Prado, but that is probably not the case. The dimensions of all four paintings (P1619, P1620, P1621, P1622) are similar, but their provenance is not. This, and Table with Cloth, Salt Cellar, Gilt Standing Cup, Pie, Jug, Porcelain Plate with Olives and Cooked Fowl (P1622), are first documented when they were inv

On August 29, 1626, King Philip IV’s painter, Vicente Carducho (ca. 1576-1638), signed a contract for the creation of a cycle of paintings to celebrate the founding of the Carthusian Order by Saint Bruno and its leading members. This colossal undertaking sought to visually narrate numerous episodes from the Carthusians’ history and tradition. It was the most complete commission ever dedicated to t

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio)

Having delivered the Bacchus and Ariadne in 1523 Titian then painted The Andrians, also inspired by Philostratus (Imagines I, 25). The scene is set on the island of Andros, a place so favoured by Bacchus that a stream flows with wine. Gods, men and children unite in the celebration of the effects of wine, whose consumption, in Philostratus´ words, makes men rich, dominant, generous to their friend

A vessel formed by four pieces of rock crystal and a gold mount. Seen from the front, the sides rise parallel to each other, while emerging on one side is a fold that forms the spout. The upper plane of the mouth is cut on a slight inclination, with the lip of the spout at the highest point. On the opposite side, a thick S-shaped handle with carved foliage, mouldings and ova rises above the mouth,

A jug comprising various pieces of crystal and six adornments in gilded silver. The glass case of a reliquary, possibly Rhenish, has been used for the body, to which a base has been added, decorated with swirling flutes, all joined together with a late mannerist adornment, in a style that some specialists associate with the circle of the silversmith François I Roberday.Owing to its great va

This was the most valuable object in the whole of the Grand Dauphin’s collection. Its mounting is now lost. It is a monolithic piece in the form of a jug with a bell-shaped body and tall neck that opens out in three everted gadroons forming a trefoil mouth. The handle, carved in the same block, ascends straight from the shoulder of the body to the edge of the mouth, where it curves slightly. A ver
