Both, Jan

Utrecht, 1618/1622 - Utrecht, 1652

According to Von Sandrart, he trained in Gerard van Honthorst’s workshop between 1634 and 1637. Burke (1976) suggests that he may have later started out as an Italianate landscape painter in the workshop of Charles Cornelisz. de Hooch (1600/1606–1638). The first documented record is that of his 1638 admission to the Academy of Saint Luke in Rome, where he must have arrived around 1635, if not earlier. There he joined his brother Andries (around 1612–1641), a painter of figures and genre interiors within the style of the so-called bamboccianti, the followers of Pieter van Laer ‘il Bamboccio’ (1599– after 1642) who specialised in popular genre scenes. At the same time, he befriended Herman van Swanevelt (1600–1655) and Claudio de Lorena (around 1600–1682). He participated with them in the commission of Italianate landscapes for the Buen Retiro Palace. Around 1641, he returned to Utrecht, where he appears documented in 1646 and 1649, the year in which he was named ‘overman’ of the city’s Guild of Saint Luke.
After his return from Holland, he permanently abandoned genre scenes to completely devote himself to Italianate landscapes based on the drawings and studies he made from life while in Italy. This constitutes his most original contribution to Dutch painting. He had numerous followers and imitators. His landscapes were highly appreciated, even throughout the 18th century. In the 19th century, however, he fell into oblivion, and it was not until the 1960s that the recovery of his work began with the studies of Waddingham and Burke (Posada, T., Pintura Holandesa en el Museo Nacional del Prado, 2009, pág. 252).
