Castro, Manuel de

¿? - Madrid (Spain), 1712

This painter, probably of Portuguese origin, studied with Claudio Coello and participated in restoration projects at the monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial during the final third of the 17th century. He then moved to Italy, where he studied at the academies in Rome for eight years. After returning to Madrid, he was commissioned by several convents in that city, including la Trinidad, la Merced, San Juan de Dios and San Felipe Neri, among others. Outstanding among his works are panels of Saint Peter, the Immaculate Conception and Saint Christopher for the convent church of Los Ángeles del Puerto in Garachico, Tenerife (on site), and his three paintings at the Museo del Prado. On Agust 19, 1698, he was appointed the King’s painter and he held that post until his death.
