Fernández, Luis

Madrid, 1594 - Madrid (Spain), post. 1657

There is very little mention of this Spanish painter whom Palomino considered a native of Madrid and disciple of Eugenio Cajés. His painting was very dependent on his teacher's approach, with a loose and richly colored technique. The side altarpiece at the church in Cebreros (Avila) was signed by him in 1624 but it is of much lesser quality than other known works by his hand, which suggests the existence of another artist of the same name. His "Saint Joachim and Saint Anne" (collegiate church of Pastrana, Guadalajara) is from 1630, while his "Saint Laurence" (Prado) dates from 1632. In the present work, which was formerly in the Museo de la Trinidad, Fernández shapes a monumental figure with a skillful treatment of light and delicately sumptuous colors (García López, D. in Enciclopedia, Madrid, 2006, tomo III, p. 1050).
