Pereda y Salgado, Antonio de

Valladolid (Spain), 1611 - Madrid (Spain), 1678

A typical member of the mid 17th-century group of painters from Madrid, whichwas truly a school of painters and was protected by the court and religious institutions. Its members were almost all contemporaries of Velazquez, although with different degrees of skill, and many were unquestionably great and distinctive. Overall, their work shows an evolution from concrete realism towards the greater decorative, colorist and brilliant taste that paved the way to the full baroque.

Pereda moved to Madrid while quite young to study with Pedro de las Cuevas, a well-known painter with numerous students. He was a protege of the Marquis of La Torre but never managed to obtain an appointment as an official painter. An excellent creator of compositions based on the Bible, the Gospel or the lives of saints for devout and often uncompromising clients, he was also an outstanding still-life painter. Besides his intense naturalist votive works and his still lifes, he also crafted vanitas that are now considered his most attractive works. Some are, in fact, masterpieces of that genre.

These works entirely surpass the rigorous, magically mathematical or severely symmetrical schemes favored by Cotán and Van der Hamen, although they share those painters' preference for horizontal arrangements, a zig-zag distribution of objects on a table or ledge and powerful, directed lighting. The accumulation of objects of Neapolitan, Flemish or even Dutch origin, however, mark a clear stylistic advance that defines this artist as a man of his time (Luna, J. J. in: "El bodegón español en el Prado. De Van der Hamen a Goya", Museo Nacional del Prado, 2008, p. 164).
