Sarto, Andrea del (Andrea d'Agnolo)

Florence, 1486 - Florence, 1530

Vasari (1511-1574), who was himself a pupil of Andrea del Sarto (Andrea d'Agnolo) during the mid-1520s, indicated that this painter and draftsman trained under an obscure artist, Gian Barile, before moving to the workshop of Piero di Cosimo (1461/62-c. 1521). He gained independence in 1508 when, with Franciabigio (1484-1525), he established his own workshop. Around this time, del Sarto secured a number of important commissions, including that to execute five frescoes depicting the Life of S. Filippo Benizzi (1509-10) in the atrium of S. Anunziata in Florence. The following year, in 1511, he began work on frescoes for the refectory of S. Salvi, Florence but only in 1526-1527 was he able to complete the work. He also painted a cycle of grisaille frescoes of the Life of St. John the Baptist for the Chiostro dello Scalzo; records of payment survive from 1515 onwards, although stylistic analysis suggests that he began work on these some years earlier. By the end of the second decade, del Sarto had established himself not only as a leading local artist, but one with an international reputation also: in 1517, he executed his best-known altarpiece, the Madonna delle Arpie (Florence, Uffizi), while the following year was spent in France at the invitation of Francis I. After his return, he was invited in the early 1520s with Franciabigio and others to decorate the Medici villa at Poggio a Caiano. But this work was interrupted by the death of Pope Leo X in 1521, and del Sarto never completed his section (Turner, N.: From Michelangelo to Annibale Carracci. A century of Italian drawings from the Prado, Art Services International-Museo Nacional del Prado, 2008, p. 60).
