Provenance
Royal Collection (Carlo Maratti Collection, Roma, 1712; acquisition of Felipe V, 1723, n. 165; Collection of Felipe V, Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, Segovia, 1727; Collection of Felipe V, La Granja Palace, “pieza donde se dice misa”, 1746, n. 174; La Granja Palace, 1794, n. 174; La Granja Palace, 1814-1818, n. 174)

This allegorical landscape alludes to the glories of the city of Rome. In the foreground, in front of an Etruscan sarcophagus symbolizing the origin of Roman civilization, a figure points out the path leading to the classical buildings in the background.

A Frenchman living in Rome, Poussin studied Raphael and classical Antiquity, which were the main sources of his work.
