Carnicero was a second-rate painter on the Spanish art scene of his time. Here he becomes a chronicler of a singular historic event: the ascent of a Montgolfier balloon by the French pilot, Bouclé, on 5 June 1784. This event, which apparently ended in an accident, took place in the gardens of Aranjuez in the presence of the Royal Family, the court and the towns people, who appear here in the characteristic dress of Majos and Majas. The work was commissioned by the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, from whom it was acquired by the Prado. Other authors relate this event with the ascent of another balloon of the same characteristics piloted by the Marquis of Arle and Pilastre de Rozier on 23 November 1783, at El Escorial.
