Configuration

Activate up to five simultaneous timelines, select the type of content you want to see and with a simple drag and drop, place them in the desired place.

The Timeline allows for a simultaneous comparison between the artists and works in the Museo del Prado and up to four knowledge layers.

The information in the Museo del Prado layer derives from the database of the Museum’s collection and includes all the paintings, sculptures and works of art in the collection, created between the 12th and 19th centuries.

The information from the other layers derives from Wikipedia and Wikidata.

In the Museo del Prado layer the works and artists appear at the start of the year of creation of the work or of the artist’s birth.

Setting up layers

The number and ordering of the layers can be configured by the user from the cog icon located at the top right of the screen.

The Museo del Prado layer and the historical context layer are pre-programmed to appear.

The Museo del Prado layer is fixed and permanent and will always appear at the bottom of the Timeline.

The configurator allows the user to decide the order in which he/she wishes to show each layer by simply dragging the layers, changing their order and applying the changes.

Each layer has the option to show works of art, artists or both at once. In the case of the historical context layer there is the option to choose between rulers, historical events or both.

In the case of elements such as individuals, monarchies, historical events, etc., the lifelines show the length of their lives or duration. In the case of individuals, the lifeline runs from their birth date to death date. In the case of a war, it runs from its start to its end.

Elements search

Elements can be selected from the predictive search tool located at the top of the screen. The search tool offers results for all the knowledge layers even if they are not visible at that moment.

By selecting an element that is not in a visible layer, the visible layers in the Timeline will be eliminated and will be replaced by the layers in which the element searched for is located, in addition to the Museo del Prado layer.

The elements selected can be eliminated using the “X” button in the search box.

Browsing focus

The browsing focus button, which appears at the lower right of the screen, allows users to return to the starting point of the search or the selection of an element when that element is still active.

Entry on the selected element

By double clicking on an entry for an artist or work detailed information on that element will appear, as well as a series of options:

Show work or artist in context: in the layers visible at that moment all the elements contemporary with a work or the artist’s lifetime will be highlighted, with a margin of 5 years prior to and after that period in the Timeline.

See artist and his/her works: this option highlights both an artist and his/her works. This option is available for artists in the Museo del Prado layer.

Save session

The Timeline automatically saves the information from the last session in the browser. On exiting and reentering the Timeline the user’s last configuration preferences and search will be saved.

The browser’s URL stores the parameters of the search or configuration at any one moment. As a result, this URL can be saved for later or sent to another device in which it will appear with the same configuration.
