"Arte incómodo": "Female Nude", 1895, Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench. “Uninvited Guests"

Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench "Female Nude", 1895

In the nineteenth century, art avoided representing the female genitals. With few exceptions, they constituted an invisible taboo that artists used various artifices to conceal. Pinazo’s work is an unusual example within the Spanish tradition of a frontal nude with bold foreshortening that displays the model’s sex, emphasised by the absence of paint on the priming, an emptiness that paradoxically turns it into the focal point of the composition.
