"Arte incómodo": "The Holy Family with a Little Bird" (copy of Murillo), 1848, Isabella II, Queen of Spain | “Uninvited Guests" Wednesday, February 10, 2021

Isabella II, Queen of Spain (1830-1904) "The Holy Family with a Little Bird" (copy of Murillo), 1848

When about to turn eighteen, Isabella II presented this picture at the exhibition held in 1848 at the Royal Academy of San Fernando. Of all the works submitted to the public exhibitions by her and her mother, María Cristina de Borbón, this copy of Murillo was the one that drew the highest praise from the press. The choice of a pious domestic subject by the young queen does not appear to be coincidental, for she was then pregnant with her first child, and was the target of gossip that questioned the paternity of the king consort, Francisco de Asís. Copy of the work at the Museo del Prado.
