This statue was assembled in the seventeenth-century with a toga-clad body from the second quarter of the second century A.D. and a head of Augustus dating from the end of the first century B.C.
The emperor appears wearing a veil, in keeping with the "Forbes" type of portrait, which was created at the time he was named Maximum Pontifice. These portraits were distributed as cultural images of the Genius of Augustus before his death and actual deification.
