On several occasions, Sorolla portrayed his friends in similar compositions and formats, sitting in three quarters and slightly turned towards the viewer. That is how he depicts his friend, Doctor Francisco Sandoval in a rapid painting with large patches of paint, using slender, liquid brushstrokes.
This work was donated by the Doctor to the now-defunct Museum of Modern Art in 1929.
