This allegorical landscape alludes to the glories of the city of Rome. In the foreground, in front of an Etruscan sarcophagus symbolizing the origin of Roman civilization, a figure points out the path leading to the classical buildings in the background.
A Frenchman living in Rome, Poussin studied Raphael and classical Antiquity, which were the main sources of his work.
