Seated on a throne and crowned by angels, the Virgen looks sweetly at the Christ Child between her knees. Reni depicts Mary as Queen of Heaven. The composition is outstanding for the brilliant color of the Virgin's robes and tunic and its marked verticality.
It was in the Sacristy of El Escorial, where it had been sent by Felipe IV. José Bonaparte took it to France, but it was returned to Spain in 1815.
