A landscape of the large crags along the Canal of Mancorbo, in the foothills of the Andara range at the eastern part of Picos de Europa in the Cantabrian shire of Liébana. At the bottom of the work are three cows and their cowherd, wearing a blanket.
The polished and finished technique and large dimensions reveal that this work was painted in the artist's studio. Nevertheless, its pictorial quality and the realism of its composition are outstanding.
The preparatory sketch for this painting, dated in situ in 1874, is in a private collection in Santander.
This work was acquired from the artist for the Prado museum by Royal Order of 10 August 1876. It later entered the now-defunct Museum of Modern Art, from which it returned to the Prado Museum.
