- Legacy of Joaquín Iruretagoyena y Errazu, 1953
A portrait of Manuela de Errazu,
the sister of Ramón de Errazu
(1841-1904), who was an important
Mexican art collector living in
Paris.
This is one of Madrazo's most
exquisite images. With special
mastery he applies both his drawing
skills —capturing the sitter's
details— and his capacity for the
freest and most rapid execution,
visible in the carpet and
background curtains. Of particular
interest is the volume Madrazo
manages to give the figure by using
careful brushstrokes that
accentuate her dimensions,
including, for example, her
fingernails or the highlights on
the satin parts of her dress.
This work was bequeathed to the
Prado Museum by the sitter's son,
Joaquín Irureta-Goyena, in 1953.
