A three-quarter portrait of María Dolores de Alfonso y Aldama, Marchioness of Montelo, wearing black lace and leaning on a red velvet sofa. Despite the sober palette, Madrazo shows his mastery in obtaining different tones. The soft lighting brings out the sitter's white face and hands and the attention paid to the drawing is especially clear in the Marchioness's facial features and the wealth of details in both the objects and the dress and adornments she wears.

This work was donated to the now-defunct Museum of Modern Art by Celina Alfonso y Aldama, the Marchioness's daughter, and was accepted by Royal Order of 20 February 1920.
