A representation of penitent Saint Jerome (Ca. 340-420), wearing only his red Cardinal's cape and holding a cross which he beats his chest with a stone.
The treatment of the light, which outlines the saint's figure over a neutral background, and the detailed representation of both the saint's anatomy and his dynamic gaze give this work great expressivity and reveal the skill at communicating through painting that Ribera had acquired by the end of his life.
