Francisco Rizi is one of the most characteristic painters of Madrid's fully baroque court painting, with his great fondness of color and tactile values, and his taste for energetic compositions. Although much of Rizi's oeuvre consists of large works for altarpieces, he also made smaller works like this one, which is a small masterwork and a witness to the artist's magnificent gift. The treatment of color is exquisite and denotes his knowledge of Venetian and Flemish works. It serves the composition, in which Rizi obtains a perfect combination of dynamism and delicacy.
This work was probably painted for the attic of an altarpiece.
