A prototypical example of the
rhetorical bourgeois portrait that
Spain's high society demanded of
this painter, thanks to his
virtuosity at capturing not only
the model's likeness, but also the
quality of the textiles and
adornments with which the grand
ladies of that period sought to
immortalizes themselves.
The soft lighting especially brings
out the whiteness of the dress and
the qualities of the duchess's face
and hands, displaying the technical
mastery characteristic of this
artist.
This work was willed to the Prado
Museum by the duchess's aunt, María
Paz García de la Lama y Álvarez, in
1964.
